Chooda, Kaleeras, Polki Haar, Meenakari — what each piece means and how to layer them for a Delhi-Amritsar wedding.
Punjabi bridal jewellery is loud, layered, and unapologetically opulent — and that is exactly the point. The Rajwada aesthetic borrows from Mughal courts, Rajput miniatures, and the sheer visual confidence of a Delhi shaadi.
The essential Rajwada set
- Polki Rani Haar — the long, tiered necklace; the anchor piece.
- Kundan Choker — worn above the Rani Haar, often with matching earrings.
- Meenakari earrings — reverse-enamel work on the back so the piece is beautiful even when hair is up.
- Jhumka danglers — heavy, often paired with a chain that pins to the hair to transfer the weight.
- Maang Tikka + Passa — forehead + side hair pieces, always mirrored to the earrings.
- Chooda (bangles) — 21 red bangles for the ceremony, worn under lighter gold Kada.
- Kaleeras — hanging umbrella pieces from the wrist.
- Nath — smaller than the Maharashtrian Nath, but often paired with a hair chain.
How to layer without looking overloaded
Punjabi bridal is a structured layering — necklaces graduate in length from the choker to the Rani Haar, and earrings match the tikka. The mistake modern brides make is mixing Polki and Kundan pieces from different sets; the eye reads the mismatch instantly. Buy the choker, Rani Haar, earrings, tikka, and passa from one jeweller — the same setter, the same stone quality.
The Meenakari back — do not ignore it
The reverse side of Kundan earrings is enamel-painted in floral patterns. This is not decoration for the jeweller — it is decoration for you. During the mehendi and roka ceremonies your hair is up, and the back of the earring becomes the front. Insist on Meenakari when you buy.
Buying tips
- Ask for the Kundan certificate — it should specify the setting technique (Jadau, Meenakari) and the origin of the gold.
- Chooda is traditionally gifted by the mama (mother's brother). Do not buy it yourself.
- Kaleeras can be silver or gold-plated — no need to spend on 22K gold for pieces you wear for one day.
